Due to the extreme cold temperatures on New Years Eve, time actually slowed down, causing the new year to arrive 2.3445 seconds later than normal. Roughly 2 million people were in New York City's Times Square waiting for the new year to click over. People were shocked to see the year was late coming in.
Elsewhere in the world, time seemed to run at a normal rate. But in NYC, the new year was delayed by almost full 3 full seconds.
People were baffled. "We didn't think this was even possible. We felt like idiots when we started cheering and noticed that the year had not actually started ", said one person in the crowd.
